Employment Type: Full-time

Salary Band: Band 2 ($46,431 – $69,647 · $23.81 – $35.72/hr)





POSITION PURPOSE

The Assistant Cook supports the Head Cook in the day-to-day operation of the Cixʷatin Centre kitchen and, in the Head Cook's absence, performs the duties of the Head Cook. The role assists with menu planning, grocery and supplies purchasing, and the daily preparation of nutritious meals and snacks. The kitchen is managed in strict compliance with FNHA and Island Health licensing regulations and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government personnel policies, working in consultation with the Health & Social Services Director or designate to ensure smooth coordination with other Nation programs.





ACCOUNTABILITY

Kitchen Operations

  • Plan meals and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide.
  • Conduct housekeeping tasks to keep the kitchen organized, clean, safe, and hygienic; follow the sanitization plan when dishwashing.
  • Complete clean-up after each meal (dishes, countertops, etc.).
  • Liaise with the First Nation Health Authority as required to keep the kitchen compliant with licensing and regulations.
  • Maintain a regular inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies.

Ordering & Purchasing

  • Purchase groceries to implement planned menus within the Centre's food budget, in consultation with the H&S Director or designate.
  • Purchase household supplies and minor equipment and maintain a regular inventory.
  • Unpack and check all orders against receipts.
  • Follow established procedures for forwarding purchase receipts.

Program Support

  • Maintain open communication with the H&S Director or designate and with event organizers regarding dietary restrictions and allergies.
  • Assist, within First Aid qualifications, in administration of first aid as required.
  • Participate in fire drills and other emergency procedures as necessary.

Professional Conduct & Other Duties

  • Attend staff and program meetings as required.
  • Attend professional development and relevant training (e.g. maintain current food-handling certification).
  • Participate in special events as assigned by the H&S Director or designate.
  • Promptly report any existing or potential workplace hazards to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the H&S Director or designate (e.g. the Head Cook).


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Grade 12 Diploma
  • Valid Food Safe Certificate
  • Valid Standard First Aid and Level C CPR Certification
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle
  • Satisfactory criminal record check

Preferred:

  • Experience as a cook, preferably in a First Nation setting
  • Familiarity with planning and implementing menus around the Canada Food Guide and within Island Health/FNHA guidelines
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Primary place of work is the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Cixʷatin Centre in Ucluelet, BC
  • Kitchen environment with standing, lifting, and exposure to heat and cleaning agents
  • Schedule aligned with Centre meal service; occasional evening/weekend work for special events
  • Reports to: Head Cook (day-to-day) and Health & Social Services Director (program)
