About the role

The BCHP CRD-IRSU is an integrated Unit comprised of 15 highly motivated police officers from Central Saanich, Oak Bay, Saanich, Victoria and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The Unit’s mandate is to reduce fatalities and serious injury crashes through targeted, data-driven traffic enforcement strategies. 


CRD-IRSU members work collaboratively across jurisdictions to address high-risk driving behaviours such as impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, intersection offences, seatbelt violations and other violations under the Motor Vehicle Act and Criminal Code. The Unit also engages in criminal interdiction, including the interception of drugs, stolen vehicles, and arrest warrants.  


Position Summary:

The BCHP CRD-IRSU Constable is responsible for self-generated and project-oriented traffic enforcement, impaired driving detection and investigations, and supporting the unit’s mandate through innovative strategies and teamwork. Constables work both independently and as part of a team, collaborating with jurisdictional traffic units, CVSE, and other enforcement agencies. The position offers opportunities for professional development and specialized training.


Secondment tenure is 2 years with possible extension opportunities to a maximum of 4 years.



Illustrative Duties and  Responsibilities:

• Conduct targeted traffic enforcement projects addressing high-risk driving behaviours.  
• Detect and investigate impaired driving offences.  
• Prepare Reports to Crown Counsel for self-generated criminal investigations.  
• Participate in criminal interdiction operations (e.g., drugs, arrest warrants).  
• Work collaboratively in a multi-jurisdictional environment with other law enforcement agencies.  
• Support data-driven enforcement strategies and contribute to crash analysis and enhanced enforcement 
   activities.  
• Maintain accurate documentation and workflow in PRIME and other relevant systems.  
• Participate in team meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.  
• Uphold the values and standards of RCMP and home agency.  


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• A sound knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and procedures contained in the Criminal Code of 
   Canada, other Federal Statutes, Provincial Statutes, and Motor Vehicle Act.  
• A sound knowledge of the CRD geography including the locations of streets, landmarks and important 
   buildings. 
• Accuracy in the preparation of documents, reports, records and, in the preparation and presentation of 
   evidence. 
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 
• Ability to deal with the public tactfully, courteously and professionally under a variety of circumstances. 
• Ability to withstand the physical strain and mental stress associated with police work. 
• Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.  
• Established ability to achieve the mandate of the Unit.  
• Ability to work collaboratively and problem solve in both a dynamic team environment and with partner 
   agencies.  
• Ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance from the RCMP.

 
Desired / Preferred Qualifications: 
• Experience working in a multi-jurisdictional environment.  
• Willingness to accept flexibility in shifts and duties as per respective CBA’s (10-hour shifts, overtime 
   opportunities).  
• Experience in traffic investigation and enforcement is preferred.  
• Willingness to participate in specialized training (e.g., DRE, ALPR, SFST, Motorcycle Training).  
• Due to funding commitments, preference will be given to members without conflicting obligations.
