About the role

The Community Resource Officer (CRO) primary function is to be an ambassador for the Victoria Police Department and is responsible for prioritizing and analyzing concerns identified by police and community members.  This requires the ability to carefully examine the underlying conditions that have led to community problems and proactively seek new and alternative responses. The ability to think proactively and develop preventative action is critical, as is the capacity to engage with a wide range of partner agencies, community organizations, and the public. The CRO must lead, coordinate, and delegate tasks to members of the Community Services Division and Patrol Division where an integrated team response is appropriate or required. This is a demanding position which requires strong organizational skills.

 

Job Description:

  • Uniform position Work (4) - 10 hour shifts per week.  Some flexibility may be required to attend community events outside the traditional work hours 
  • Analyze problems and identify solutions that may include enforcement or involvement of community groups or agencies (Solution Oriented Policing) 
  • Identify and examine the events and conditions that led to the problems, research and obtain data. Collaborate, develop and implement response plans focusing on innovative solutions 
  • Liaise with community groups and associations to address concerns
  • Attend meetings and provide public presentations when appropriate on behalf of the Department
  • Research and provide information on crime patterns at community group meetings 
  • Provide guidance to various committees, task forces, action groups and service providers 
  • Perform security audits and speak in public settings with community members
  • Flexibility in schedule to attend community events


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of harm reduction initiatives and strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to implement innovative solutions to challenge
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with public speaking experience
  • Self Starter who is effective working in teams and with community members
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Understanding and compassionate; experienced managing issues effecting marginalized individuals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Police Mountain Bike trained or willingness to complete this training
