Role Overview

The Principal Data Consultant is a senior strategic consulting role responsible for helping enterprise clients define, govern, and operationalise modern data ecosystems.

This role combines data governance leadership, information architecture, enterprise data strategy, and data product operating model design to enable organisations to unlock trusted, scalable, and business-aligned data capabilities.

You will work closely with executive stakeholders, architects, engineering teams, and business leaders to define data operating models, establish governance frameworks, shape data product strategy, and guide modern platform transformation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Data Strategy & Advisory
• Define enterprise data strategies aligned to business objectives
• Assess organisational data maturity and define transformation roadmaps
• Advise clients on modern data operating models and governance structures
• Provide strategic direction on enterprise data modernisation initiatives
• Data Governance Leadership
• Design and operationalise enterprise data governance frameworks
• Establish governance councils, stewardship models, and ownership structures
• Define enterprise data policies, standards, and control frameworks
• Drive data quality improvement programmes across critical business domains
• Implement governance processes for data lifecycle management
• Information Architecture
• Define enterprise information architecture principles and frameworks
• Design scalable domain-driven data architectures
• Shape metadata, lineage, catalogue, and discoverability strategies
• Establish standards for information modelling and semantic consistency
• Data Product & Data Mesh Enablement
• Define and operationalise data product frameworks
• Enable Data Mesh-aligned domain ownership models
• Establish governance requirements for publishing trusted data products
• Drive adoption of product-thinking across enterprise data teams
• Platform & Transformation Enablement
• Guide cloud data platform transformation initiatives
• Partner with engineering teams on governance-aligned platform design
• Support modernisation initiatives across Databricks, Azure, and cloud-native ecosystems
• Ensure governance, access control, lineage, and compliance requirements are embedded in platform delivery
• Leadership & Consulting
• Lead senior stakeholder engagements
• Translate complex data concepts into business-aligned recommendations
• Mentor consultants and delivery teams
• Contribute to DVT’s Data & AI practice capability development
• Support sales with technical client interactions and preparation of proposals
• Drive certifications programs across relevant vendors and technologies

Minimum Experience

• 10+ years in data management, governance, architecture, or enterprise data consulting
• Proven experience leading enterprise data governance initiatives
• Strong experience designing operating models and governance frameworks
• Experience shaping information architecture at enterprise scale
• Exposure to modern cloud data platforms and data product ecosystems
• Experience working in complex, regulated enterprise environments
• Consulting or advisory delivery experience preferred
