About the role

Join our magical faculty in a role dedicated to teaching practical defensive magic, fostering resilience and confidence in young witches and wizards. We are seeking an experienced, patient, and enthusiastic educator to deliver an engaging curriculum in defensive spellwork, care of dark creatures, and strategic thinking under pressure. The successful candidate will create a safe, inclusive learning environment and contribute to the broader life of the school.

Overview

You will plan and deliver lessons that combine theory and hands-on practice in defensive magic. The role requires strong classroom management, a calm demeanour during stressful situations, and the ability to adapt teaching to different ages and skill levels. You will work closely with colleagues across the curriculum to support pupils’ academic and personal development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality lessons — prepare and teach a balanced syllabus covering defensive spells, counter-curses, protective enchantments, and the history and ethics of dark magic defence.

  • Practical training — lead supervised practical sessions in spellcasting, wandwork, defensive drills, and simulated encounters, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols.

  • Creature handling — instruct safe interaction and management of potentially dangerous creatures encountered during defensive studies, in line with welfare guidelines.

  • Assessment and feedback — assess pupil progress, provide constructive feedback, set targets, and maintain accurate records of attainment and behaviour.

  • Pastoral support — support pupils’ wellbeing, build resilience, and advise on managing fear and stress related to encounters with dark forces.

  • Risk management — conduct and maintain risk assessments for lessons, store and manage defensive artefacts and materials safely, and report incidents promptly.

  • Extra-curricular activities — contribute to school life through clubs, demonstrations, parent evenings, and inter-house defensive tournaments.

  • Professional development — remain up to date with defensive pedagogy, new defensive techniques, and legislative requirements relevant to magical education.

Person Specification

  • Qualified teacher — recognised teaching qualification and specialist knowledge in defensive magic, magical theory, or a closely related discipline.

  • Practical experience — proven experience instructing defensive spellwork and managing practical magic sessions safely.

  • Classroom management — ability to maintain calm, order, and focus during high-intensity practical work.

  • Strong communicator — clear, encouraging communicator with pupils, parents, and colleagues.

  • Safeguarding commitment — thorough understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and experience applying them in a magical context.

  • Adaptability and resilience — flexible approach to teaching, comfortable with unpredictable situations and able to make sound decisions under pressure.

  • Team player — collaborative attitude and willingness to contribute to school initiatives and interdisciplinary projects.

Essential Qualifications and Checks

  • Recognised teaching qualification or equivalent professional experience in defensive magic.
  • Demonstrable track record of safe practical instruction.
  • Enhanced background check and adherence to the school’s safeguarding policies.
  • Willingness to undertake ongoing training and first-aid for magical incidents.
  • Supportive, inclusive working environment that values individuality and collaboration.
  • Opportunities for professional development, conferences, and advanced defensive training.
  • Access to well-equipped training rooms, secure stores of teaching materials, and a network of experienced colleagues.
  • Competitive remuneration, pension scheme, and staff wellbeing resources.

We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Please submit a CV and a cover letter outlining your teaching philosophy, relevant experience, and why you are drawn to this post. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a practical demonstration lesson and interview. If you require adjustments during the recruitment process, let us know and we will make reasonable arrangements.
