About the role

  • Strategic planning and direction of security operations within the research libraries 
  • New security trainings and protocols to security staff to ensure the safety of patrons and staff
  • The structure and culture of the library and how to support the NYPL’s strategic mission 
  • Performance of security supervisors and contract staff to ensure the security needs of the library are being met efficiently 
  • Develop relationships with research library leadership and understand their security needs
  • Learn the structure of the security department and develop an assessment protocol
  • Use the information obtained by the assessment protocols and recommend changes to improve the efficiency of the security department
  • Manage the implementation of new security protocols  
  • Conduct surveys to determine the types of security related needs that will need to be addressed in security planning 
  • Consult with officials of area government and other institutions in order to determine and mitigate NYPL needs in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency. Partners with the NYPD, FDNY, OEM and other entities to facilitate response effort coordination
  • Develop and administer emergency/security preparedness training courses that teach staff how to effectively respond to major emergencies and disasters
  • Coordinate security response or crisis management activities such as ordering evacuations, opening public shelters, and implements special needs plans and programs for NYPL
  • Assist the Senior Director of Security by partnering with internal and external officials to prepare and analyze damage assessments following disasters or emergencies
  • Inspect all NYPL facilities and emergency management equipment such as mass communications equipment in order to determine their operational and functional capabilities in emergency situations
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state and local regulations affecting emergency plans, and ensures that plans adhere to these regulations
  • Manage and evaluate the performance of security staff 
  • Conduct thorough investigations related to library policy violations, patron safety incidents, and staff misconduct to ensure compliance and a safe community environment.

Required Education, Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, Security Management or related field required
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • 10+ years of leadership experience within the security, emergency management and training fields experience 
  • 5 - 7 years of experience directly supervising, training and scheduling staff
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient with computer technology and softwares including Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Ability to exercise caution and discretion; effective judgment and decision-making during emergency situations, and dealing professionally with the staff and public
  • Strong working knowledge of the penal code and other NYC ordinances
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service to staff, patrons and external clients
  • Promote a collaborative team environment rooted in mutual respect and clear communication to ensure seamless security operations 
  • Optimize security workflows and utilize modern technologies to deliver measurable safety outcomes
  • Proficient with CCTV technology
  • Ability to lead investigations 
  • Team Leadership: Directly supervise a team of multiple Security Supervisors, providing clear guidance, accountability, and support during assigned shifts. Promote professionalism, courtesy, and vigilance at all times.
  • Performance Oversight: Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, post compliance, and incident response. Provide feedback regularly and escalate performance issues or disciplinary concerns to senior leadership/HR when necessary.
  • Training and Development: Assist in the onboarding of new guards. Identify training needs and coach staff in real-time to ensure continuous professional development and adherence to NYPL policies.
  • Scheduling and Coverage: Collaborate with the Security management team to ensure posts are covered adequately, including adjusting assignments for call-outs, events, or emergencies.
