<p>Figure is an AI robotics company developing autonomous general-purpose humanoid robots. The goal of the company is to ship humanoid robots with human-level intelligence. Our robots are engineered to perform a variety of tasks in the home and commercial markets. Figure is headquartered in San Jose, CA and requires 5 days/week of in-office collaboration.</p> <p>We are looking for a business-first attorney who treats legal drafting as an engineering challenge rather than an academic exercise, and a "full-stack" commercial expert who is equally comfortable negotiating a global robotics supply chain as you are architecting complex AI data licensing structures.&nbsp;</p> <p>Figure’s vision is to deploy autonomous humanoids at a global scale. The ideal candidate is detail oriented who can operationalize our legal department and excel at transforming manual processes into automated, reliable systems that support Figure’s mission.</p> <h3><strong>Responsibilities</strong></h3> <ul> <li><strong>Strategic Transactions:</strong> Structure, draft, and lead negotiations for complex outbound partnerships, technology licenses, and data collection/ownership agreements.</li> <li><strong>AI Data Licensing and Infrastructure:</strong> Structure and lead negotiations for complex data collection and ownership agreements. Define the strategy for how we own or license data for AI training while protecting our proprietary datasets. Lead the negotiation of high-stakes agreements for data center capacity and GPU procurement.&nbsp;</li> <li><strong>Global Supply Chain &amp; Logistics:</strong> Act as the legal lead for manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing. Navigate the complexities of global procurement and international trade with a heavy focus on Asian supplier ecosystems. Lead the negotiation of commercial and legal terms with vendors in key manufacturing regions, ensuring supply continuity and favorable IP/liability positioning.</li> <li><strong>Cross-Functional Advising:</strong> Serve as a pragmatic advisor to commercial, engineering and supply chain teams. Provide concise counsel on IP ownership, regulatory implications, and risk mitigation for humanoid robots and AI-driven products.</li> <li><strong>Strategic Risk Balancing:</strong> Provide timely, concise counsel to internal clients on a wide array of transactional matters, including IP ownership, regulatory and privacy implications, dispute resolution, and risk mitigation.</li> <li><strong>Lean Team Flexibility:</strong> As the second member of a growing team, you will expand into additional areas of law as needed, supporting the company with novel research, subpoena responses, litigation deliverables, and corporate governance.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Requirements</strong></h3> <ul> <li><strong>Experience:</strong> 4-7+ years of relevant legal experience at a top-ranked law firm, with an emphasis on technology transactions and commercial law. A combination of law firm and in-house experience at a high-growth startup or tech leader is preferred.</li> <li><strong>Education:</strong> J.D. from a top accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the California Bar (or ability to register as In-House Counsel).</li> <li><strong>Drafting &amp; Negotiation:</strong> Proven ability to independently draft and lead negotiations for "first-of-their-kind" agreements in the AI, robotics, and hardware spaces</li> <li><strong>Communication:</strong> Ability to frame complex legal issues succinctly for executive leadership, providing clear "go/no-go" recommendations rather than open-ended legal memos.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Bonus qualifications</strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Privacy &amp; Data Mastery:</strong> CIPP/US or other CIPP certifications; experience drafting and negotiating data processing agreements and agreements for data collection in AI contexts</li> <li><strong>Manufacturing Background:</strong> Prior experience in a hardware-focused environment with a deep understanding of supply chain regulatory regimes.</li> <li><strong>RaaS:</strong> Experience drafting RaaS (“Robot-as-a-Service”) agreements, including navigating terms regarding equipment leasing, software licensing, and maintenance services, while addressing novel issues in robotic liability, uptime guarantees, and hardware-software integration for commercial customers.</li> <li><strong>Regulatory &amp; Export Control:</strong> Navigate the complexities of international trade and technology transfer. Manage legal risks related to<strong> EAR/ITAR export control</strong> classifications, sanctions compliance, and emerging AI regulatory regimes.</li> <li><strong>Human-Machine Interaction &amp; Liability:</strong> Familiarity with robotics safety standards (e.g., ISO 10218, ANSI/RIA R15.06) and evolving product liability frameworks for autonomous physical systems.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Compensation</strong></h3> <p>The US annual salary range for this position is between <strong>$200,000 - $275,000</strong></p> <p>The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits (including equity) depending on the specific role.
