About the role

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, engaging lectures, tutorials, workshop sessions, and open learning courses across FE and HE levels (up to Level 6).
  • Teach a wide-ranging and diverse curriculum, including but not limited to:
    • Electrical & Electronic Principles
    • Digital and Analogue Electronics & Communications
    • Instrumentation & Control Theory
    •  Mechatronics
    • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
    • Motors, Drives, and Power Systems
    •  Power Electronics & Power Systems Modelling
    • Electronic Production, Testing, and Products Management
    • C Programming & Embedded Systems
    • Electronic Design and Simulation
    • Engineering Mathematics (for technicians and higher levels)
    • Supervision of student Electrical and Electronic Projects
  • Contribute to school-linked 14–19 initiatives, essential/key skills development, and elements of the Welsh Baccalaureate.
  • Embed digital literacy and industry-relevant software/hardware tools seamlessly into practical sessions.
  • Contribute to supporting learners to compete in local, national and international ‘Skills Competitions’.
  • Design, invigilate, and mark assessments, coursework, and examinations in line with awarding body and university partner regulations.
  • Provide constructive, timely, and detailed feedback to students to support their academic and professional development.
  •  Act as an internal quality assurer (IQA) or participate in internal verification, moderation, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Act as a Course Leader for an assigned programme, supporting curriculum planning and ensuring the thorough tracking and monitoring of progress is kept up to date, and the data is accurately evidenced and recorded for exam boards and quality assurance.
  • Act as a Personal Tutor to an assigned group of students, fostering strong relationships to help them develop good study habits, security, and responsibility.
  • Monitor, discuss, and report on student attendance and progress using the College's database systems.
  • Consult and communicate with parents, guardians, and employers regarding student achievement and progress.
  • Deliver a College programme of personal studies under the guidance of the Director of Learner Support.
  • Offer guidance on personal welfare, referring students to appropriate internal and external specialist agencies when necessary.
  • Ensure students are aware of careers and Higher Education guidance, and prepare references for HE or employment.
  • Work flexibly to meet departmental needs. This includes daytime teaching, scheduled evening teaching sessions, and attendance at promotional events (e.g., Open Evenings, Parents' Evenings, student interviews, and enrolment days).
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of commercial, in-company courses, and external projects.
  • Support curriculum development within the faculty, college, partner schools, and other educational establishments.
  • Effectively manage any resources or equipment allocated within an agreed budget.
  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD), participate in relevant in-service training, and work towards full compliance with National Occupational Standards.
  • Implement targets outlined in the bilingual development plan, College equal opportunities policies, and monitor Health & Safety compliance.
  • Attend special events annually in support of learner achievements eg Graduation Ceremonies and Awards of Excellence Celebrations.
  • When required, participate in community exhibitions to promote engineering courses and careers with ‘have-a-go kits’ or displays.
  • On occasion escort learners on trips and educational visits

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

  • A relevant Honours Degree (BEng / BSc) in an engineering discipline or a closely related field
  • PGCE, Cert Ed, or equivalent recognised teaching qualification. (Candidates without this qualification must obtain a PGCE within 2 years of the employment date, during which the Associate Lecturer Scale will apply).
  • GCSE English and Maths at a minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • Proven experience teaching Engineering successfully across multiple levels, specifically including both FE and HE up to Level 6. Previous experience at all levels is required.
  • A thorough understanding of current relevant issues within Further and Higher Education.
  • High level of competence in utilising industry-standard software (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink, MULTISIM, CAD, PLC programming software) and hardware tools for laboratory and practical sessions
  • Ability to confidently teach a wide range of modules spanning theory, design, simulation, and practical testing.
  • Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with students and colleagues
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellent punctuality and ability to work flexibly
  • Relevant Assessor (A1/TAQA) or Verifier (V1) awards
  • Industrial experience within the electrical, electronic, or automation sectors.
  • Willingness to drive a college minibus
  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1 Desirable
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1 Desirable
