About the role

Job Summary

The Pipe Layer supports underground utility installation by performing skilled and technical field duties related to water, sewer, and storm drain systems. This role involves assisting in laying pipe, setting grades, aligning pipe systems, and ensuring proper installation of utilities according to specifications.

The Pipe Layer also supports general site operations, including trench work, grading assistance, and maintaining safe and clean job sites. This position plays a key role in daily field operations and overall job site productivity and safety.


What You’ll Do

As a Pipe Layer, you will work hands-on in the field alongside equipment operators, labor crews, and site supervisors. Responsibilities include:

  • Lay and align water, sewer, and storm drain pipes
  • Confirm trench grades using lasers, grade rods, and levels
  • Connect and seal pipe joints using approved materials and methods
  • Assist in excavation and backfilling around existing utilities
  • Support Operators and Laborers during trench and pipe installation
  • Perform general labor and site cleanup as required
  • Follow instructions from Foreman or Superintendent and work as part of a team


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate hazards and prepare for utility installation
  • Signal equipment operators to align, move, or adjust machinery, equipment, or materials
  • Load, unload, and identify materials and tools
  • Dig ditches or trenches around existing utilities; backfill excavations; grade and level trenches using hand tools and/or tamping equipment
  • May be trained to operate light or heavy equipment
  • Perform general construction labor (lifting, carrying materials up to 50 lbs) under supervision
  • Perform flagging duties to control traffic in work zones
  • Assist in grading and leveling using tools and measurement devices
  • Assist in aligning and positioning pipes during installation
  • Assist in connecting pipes and sealing joints using glue, cement, gaskets, or flanges
  • Perform other duties as assigned


What You Bring

Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in underground utilities or civil construction (required)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to read grades and understand slope requirements
  • Comfortable working in trenches (15–20 ft depths) and outdoor environments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience using hand tools, compactors, and trench safety equipment
  • Ability to perform physically demanding labor tasks

Requirements

  • Reliable transportation to project sites
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices
  • English or Spanish (Spanish-speaking strongly preferred)

Physical Demands

Employees must be able to:

  • Use vision abilities including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision
  • Use hands for handling tools and materials
  • Stand, walk, lift, and perform physical labor for extended periods
  • Lift and move up to 50 lbs regularly; occasionally up to 100 lbs with assistance
  • Perform work involving climbing, bending, kneeling, and crawling

  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions.  
  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts; is exposed to vibration, wet or humid conditions, heat, and other forms of inclement weather; and is exposed to loud noise. 
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places or in excavations (including confined spaces), and is exposed to fumes or particulates, chemicals, electrical energy and machinery.
