Senior Plant Technician

Company Overview:

Situated within the Witzenberg Local Municipality, in the Western Cape, Perdekraal East Wind Farm is less than two hours from Cape Town. The wind farm spans an area of 3055 hectares and the 110MW wind farm comprises forty-eight, 115m-high wind turbines. When operating at full capacity, Perdekraal East Wind Farm generates around 368.8 GWh/year of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 95 000 South African homes.

Summary of Role:

The key function of the role is to assist the Plant Manager in ensuring that the Wind Turbine and Balance of Plant Maintenance Contractors are working effectively with all parties to ensure that contractual obligations are fulfilled on a day-to-day basis.

Core Responsibilities:

• Assist in the administration of contract documents and ensure proper securing of files.
• Support the Manager to ensuring that the cause of turbine failures is understood.
• Liaising with the OEMs and other parties to ensure that response times are appropriate and works undertaken are carried out both safely and effectively.
• Ensuring that all appropriate records of operations and maintenance activities on site are complete and easily accessible as required.
• Provide assistance to Plant Manager to ensure that any potential asset optimisation measures are accurately prepared and presented to the customer.
  
• Support the Plant Manager and Site Health and Safety Officer to ensure site Health and Safety.
• Assist the Plant Manager in managing the processes by which site data is handled and analysed and ensuring that all proactive monitoring is carried out effectively.
• Daily Reporting and Monitoring, and preparation of monthly reports.
• Assist with Performance, Downtime and Availability Analysis.
  
• Following up significant performance issues either internally or with appropriate 3rd parties.
• Assist in reviewing all current service/maintenance records and any issues identified.
  
• Maintaining calendar of servicing plans, weekly movements, statutory inspections, etc.
• Ongoing development of systems and procedures to improve efficiency.
  
• Plan, prepare and collate relevant documents including agendas, meeting packs, presentations, correspondences, reports and minutes as required.
  
• Implement and maintain an effective hard copy and electronic filing systems.
• Support Plant Manager in the Social Performance functions.
• Provide site procurement and general office support to Plant Manager.

Job Requirements:

The Senior Plant Technician will have appropriate technical skills, knowledge and experience, in the electrical balance of plant environment, with good understanding of typical electrical substation apparatus, protection schemes and SCADA systems. An excellent working knowledge of MS Office Suite is required. Wind turbine experience would be advantageous. The position requires an organised approach. The Senior Plant Technician may have to liaise with other engineering disciplines as and when required.

Experience:

• Minimum 4 years relevant applicable experience, with commissioning and testing, maintenance and troubleshooting in high voltage substations and reticulation networks.
• Experience in a renewable energy generation environment would be advantages.
• Engineering (or other applicable) National Diploma or equivalent technical qualification, preferably in an Electrical Field.
• Be eligible to be authorised to perform switching to Low voltage, Medium Voltage and High Voltage Systems up to 132kV.
• Experience in similar supporting role preferable.
• Excellent writing and reporting skills, as well as good interpersonal relationships.
• Good communication and presentation skills.
• Good command of English, in addition Xhosa and/or Afrikaans preferable.
• Valid Driver’s licence.
• Willingness to further develop skills and experience on wind farm operations and maintenance activities, by further education and training.
