About the role

Position Summary

The Qualified Electrical Technician (Non-Licensed) is responsible for performing skilled electrical work in industrial and oil & gas environments. This position is designated by the company as a “qualified person” based on demonstrated knowledge, training, and experience in the construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.

This role does not require state electrical licensure; however, the individual must meet internal company qualification standards and demonstrate competency in accordance with applicable OSHA regulations and National Fire Protection Association standards, including NFPA 70E requirements for qualified persons.

The Qualified Electrical Technician works independently or as part of a crew and may assist in mentoring apprentices under supervision.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial electrical systems.
  • Interpret and apply electrical schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
  • Perform conduit installation (EMT, RMC, IMC, PVC) including bending, threading, and securing.
  • Terminate and test conductors, control wiring, instrumentation wiring, and power distribution systems.
  • Install and service motor control centers (MCCs), VFDs, switchgear, transformers, and panelboards.
  • Perform energized and de-energized troubleshooting in accordance with NFPA 70E safe work practices.
  • Conduct voltage testing and verification of absence of voltage using properly rated equipment.
  • Apply proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Install and maintain classified area equipment (when applicable).
  • Maintain compliance with company safety policies and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Document work performed, materials used, and test results accurately.
  • Assist in training and mentoring Apprentice Electricians.


Qualification Requirements

To be designated as a Qualified Electrical Technician (Non-Licensed), the individual must:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of electrical hazards and safe work practices.
  • Understand approach boundaries and PPE requirements under NFPA 70E.
  • Be capable of distinguishing exposed energized parts from other parts of electrical equipment.
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of test instruments and electrical tools.
  • Successfully complete internal company competency evaluations.
  • Maintain current safety training as required by company policy.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of industrial electrical experience preferred.
  • Oil & gas or hazardous location experience preferred.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship program is preferred but not required.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Ability to troubleshoot control circuits and power systems.
  • Proficient in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE including arc-rated clothing and fall protection equipment.
