Join a growing, high-impact Risk Control Services team where your expertise will directly influence how we assess, manage, and mitigate risks across complex construction portfolios. As a Principal Risk Engineer, Construction & Inland Marine you’ll play a critical role as a trusted advisor to both internal stakeholders and external partners — bringing deep technical insight, practical solutions, and strategic thinking to the forefront of our decision-making.

What you’ll do

  • Lead risk engineering strategy across construction and Builder’s Risk portfolios, championing best-in-class standards and practices.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex construction and Master Builder’s Risk accounts, supporting related lines (Property, Casualty, Professional Liability)
  • Direct risk assessments and loss control services across first- and third-party lines, helping shape underwriting strategy and client outcomes
  • Serve as a technical expert, providing clear, actionable recommendations to underwriting, claims, brokers, clients, contractors, and developers
  • Develop and share thought leadership through guidelines, white papers, training materials, and technical presentations that elevate risk engineering practices across the business
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with Underwriting, Claims, brokers, clients, and global Risk Engineering partners
  • Represent the organization in client meetings, broker engagements, preconstruction meetings, and industry events as a credible and influential voice
  • Mentor and support the development of colleagues, underwriters, and peers, helping strengthen technical capability across the team

In this senior role, you’ll go beyond technical delivery — you’ll help drive profitable growth.  Partnering closely with Underwriters, you’ll contribute to business development efforts, support client  retention, and influence key decisions that shape our portfolio.

    Risk Assessment & Technical Advisory

  • Conduct pre- and post-bind surveys, plan/spec reviews, desktop analyses, and onsite assessments.
  • Evaluate construction methodologies, phasing, logistics, COPE data, and jobsite exposures (e.g., fire, flood, wind, collapse, theft).
  • Assess critical operations including hot work, temporary services, cranes/rigging, excavation, and water intrusion controls.
  • Provide timely, expert guidance to Underwriting on risk quality, PML, delay exposures, and pricing/terms.

Loss Prevention & Mitigation

  • Develop and implement site-specific mitigation strategies (e.g., water management, hot work protocols, site security, weather and flood planning).
  • Track recommendations and ensure accurate, up-to-date risk engineering data.
  • Support claims through technical reviews, site visits, and post-incident analysis to drive continuous improvement.

Client & Broker Engagement

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, brokers, contractors, and developers.
  • Participate in client meetings, preconstruction planning, and bid-phase consultations to support growth and retention.
  • Deliver clear, high-impact reports, stewardship materials, and service plans to demonstrate value.

Portfolio Insights & Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze portfolio trends, loss drivers, and service utilization to prioritize efforts and improve outcomes.
  • Identify and implement enhancements to tools, processes, and service delivery models.
  • Support innovation through adoption of new technologies (e.g., sensors, remote monitoring, weather alerting).

Thought Leadership & Collaboration

  • Contribute to industry presence through speaking engagements, technical content, and networking.
  • Design and deliver training, tools, and resources for clients and internal teams.
  • Collaborate with underwriting and leadership to advance risk engineering and business strategy.

Additional Expectations:

  • Respond to complex, active job-site issues, providing timely guidance and coordinating recovery efforts.
  • Take ownership of special projects aligned to business priorities.
  • Travel within Canada and the U.S. (~25–50%, typically ~30%).

  • Extensive industry experience – 15+ years in construction, civil/structural engineering, risk engineering, Builder’s Risk, Property Risk Engineering, or loss control/prevention environments.
  • Strong technical foundation – Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, engineering, mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent experience); advanced degrees or specialized training are an asset.
  • Professional credentials – P.Eng. designation preferred; additional certifications such as CPCU, CRM, ARM, CFPS, CRE, CSP, CIH, CPE, or CIP are highly valued.
  • Deep industry expertise – Strong knowledge of construction practices, building and fire codes, site safety standards, catastrophe exposures, and loss prevention strategies.
  • Broad insurance knowledge – Experience across Builder’s Risk, Inland Marine, Property Engineering, Professional Liability, Fire Protection, and Casualty lines (e.g., Wrap-Up Liability, GL, Environmental, Auto) is strongly preferred.
  • Analytical & strategic mindset – Proven ability to assess complex risks, think critically, and deliver practical, value-added solutions.
  • Communication & influence – Exceptional ability to present technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders, supported by strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Relationship management – Demonstrated success building trusted partnerships with internal teams, clients, brokers, contractors, and developers.
  • Leadership & consulting capability – Skilled in leadership, planning, client service, training, and technical advisory roles.
  • Technical proficiency – Advanced capability with standard business tools and software, including Microsoft Office and risk/engineering systems.
  • Results-driven & adaptable – Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Bilingual capability – Professional fluency in English and French is an asset.

Target Hiring Range: CAD $155,000 – $195,000

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role, however, offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
