Southpointe is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative Teacher Assistant who will assist and deliver authentic Mandarin language instruction integrated to transdisciplinary PYP themes. Reporting to the Junior School Assistant Principal or designate, the Junior School Mandarin Language Teacher Assistant position will commence on August 27, 2026 and conclude on June 18, 2027.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Student Learning and Classroom Support

  • Assist the Lead Mandarin Teacher in delivering engaging Mandarin learning experiences for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5.
  • Support students during whole-class, small-group, and individual learning activities, providing additional assistance to learners with varying levels of Mandarin proficiency.
  • Reinforce students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through guided practice and targeted support.
  • Provide individualized support to students who require additional academic, behavioural, social-emotional, or language-learning assistance.
  • Collaborate with teachers and specialists to implement accommodations, learning support strategies, and individualized learning plans as required.
  • Encourage students to participate confidently in Mandarin language activities and classroom conversations.
  • Help foster an inclusive, respectful, and positive classroom environment where all learners feel supported and successful.
  • Support the Lead Mandarin Teacher in maintaining classroom routines, expectations, and positive student behaviour.


Classroom Operations and Student Supervision

  • Prepare, organize, and maintain instructional materials, learning resources, classroom displays, and language-rich learning environments.
  • Assist with the implementation of inquiry-based and developmentally appropriate learning activities, including those connected to IB PYP Units of Inquiry.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, recesses, lunch periods, field trips, and other school activities, both on and off campus, to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Support students during arrival, dismissal, and other daily transitions to promote a smooth and orderly school experience.
  • Provide classroom supervision when the Lead Mandarin Teacher is working with individuals or small groups in nearby learning spaces.
  • Assist with after-school programs, co-curricular activities, and other student programs as assigned.


Assessment and Documentation Support

  • Assist in collecting and organizing evidence of student learning through observations, student work samples, and digital portfolios.
  • Document student progress, participation, and behavioural observations to support assessment, reporting, and instructional planning.
  • Support the preparation and organization of assessment materials, learning artifacts, and student records.
  • Assist with the use of educational technology and digital tools to document and showcase student learning.


Collaboration and Professional Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with the Lead Mandarin Teacher, classroom teachers, learning support staff, specialists, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Participate in team meetings, planning discussions, professional learning opportunities, and school initiatives as appropriate.
  • Support cultural celebrations, language-learning events, and activities that promote international-mindedness and community engagement.
  • Communicate professionally and positively with all members of the school community.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficiency in Mandarin and English (spoken and written).
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and take direction from the Lead Mandarin Teacher.
  • Demonstrated patience, flexibility, initiative, and enthusiasm for supporting student learning.
  • Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) is an asset.
  • Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, and student-centred learning environment;
  • Certificate or coursework in Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language; 
  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary Educational Assistant program;
  • Valid First-Aid certificate.


Salary 

  • $34.27 hourly
