About the role

About the Role

Obscure is looking for a seasoned Senior Security Pre-Sales Engineer to join our technical team in Gauteng. This is a high-impact, customer-facing role for someone who lives at the intersection of cybersecurity expertise and commercial acumen: able to hold a boardroom conversation one moment and go deep with a SOC analyst the next.

You will be the technical authority across our key vendor portfolio, working closely with Sales, Engineering, and the SOC team to design solutions, lead demonstrations, run proofs of concept, and build lasting trust with clients across enterprise and mid-market segments.

What You’ll Do

  • Solution Design. Design and architect tailored security solutions by engaging directly with prospective and existing clients to understand their specific challenges and environment.
  • Technical Presentations. Present confidently to large audiences, from executive briefings and industry events to hands-on technical workshops, translating complex security concepts for any room.
  • Deep-Dive Engagements. Lead deep-dive technical engagements with security architects, SOC teams, and engineers, going as far into the technology as the conversation requires.
  • Demos and POCs. Plan, scope, and execute product demonstrations and proofs of concept, always ensuring outcomes align with client objectives.
  • Vendor Mastery. Maintain and develop deep technical mastery across our nine strategic vendors, acting as a trusted advisor to both clients and internal stakeholders.
  • RFI / RFP Support. Respond to the technical sections of tenders, RFIs, and RFPs with accuracy and clarity.
  • SOC Alignment. Position and articulate Obscure’s SOC capabilities, helping clients understand how MDR and threat intelligence integrate into their environment.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration. Work cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, Engineering, and the SOC team to drive opportunities through the pipeline.
  • Industry Presence. Represent Obscure at industry events, vendor sessions, partner enablement days, and customer engagements.

Strategic Vendor Focus

You will be expected to develop and maintain strong technical expertise across nine vendors spanning email security, data resilience, network and endpoint security, identity, exposure management, and DDoS protection:

  • Proofpoint
  • Rubrik
  • Palo Alto Networks
  • Forescout
  • Netscout
  • Radware
  • Okta
  • Sendmarc
  • Pentera

SOC Knowledge: Non-Negotiable

A solid working understanding of how a modern Security Operations Centre functions is essential. You need to be able to speak to clients with authority on:

  • SOC operating models, tiered analyst structures, and escalation workflows
  • SIEM, SOAR, EDR/XDR, and threat intelligence platforms and how they integrate
  • Incident detection, triage, response, and post-incident review
  • Use cases, detection engineering, and tuning principles
  • MITRE ATT&CK framework and modern threat hunting methodologies
  • MDR service delivery models

Technical Requirements

Cybersecurity Foundations

  • Strong grasp of network security, endpoint security, identity and access management, email security, and data protection
  • Solid working knowledge of zero trust architecture, SASE, and modern security frameworks
  • Familiarity with the South African compliance and regulatory landscape: POPIA, PCI-DSS, and ISO 27001

Identity and Access Management

  • Understanding of Identity Providers and modern identity concepts: SSO, MFA, and passwordless authentication
  • Familiarity with federation standards including SAML, OAuth 2.0, and OpenID Connect
  • Knowledge of conditional access, identity governance, and PAM principles
  • Awareness of identity threat detection and response (ITDR) and why identity has become the primary attack surface

Vulnerability and Attack Surface Management

  • Strong understanding of the vulnerability management lifecycle: discovery, prioritisation, remediation, and validation
  • Familiarity with risk-based approaches, CVSS scoring, and exploit-driven prioritisation
  • Working knowledge of Attack Surface Management (ASM): external exposure discovery, continuous monitoring, and shadow IT identification
  • Understanding of CTEM frameworks and how breach and attack simulation fits into the broader exposure management picture

Microsoft Ecosystem

  • Solid understanding of Active Directory, Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and the Defender suite
  • Ability to discuss how Microsoft security tooling integrates with third-party security stacks

Cloud Platforms

  • Working knowledge of Azure, AWS, and GCP
  • Understanding of cloud security principles: IAM, workload protection, posture management, and shared responsibility models
  • Comfortable discussing hybrid and multi-cloud security architectures

Who We’re Looking For

  • A minimum of seven years in a Cybersecurity Pre-Sales role engaging enterprise clients.
  • Presentation skills. Proven ability to present to large audiences: confident, articulate, and engaging on stage.
  • Technical depth. Equally comfortable going deep on technical detail when the audience calls for it.
  • Commercial acumen. Understands how technical decisions connect to business outcomes and commercial impact.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
  • Self-directed. Manages multiple opportunities in parallel, drives outcomes, and doesn’t need close supervision.
  • Customer-focused. Builds long-term client relationships and earns credibility through consistency and expertise.
