Job Summary
The construction skilled laborer helps the pipe layer by performing duties requiring technical experience. Duties include assisting with laying pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. S/he may assist in the performance of any combination of the following tasks: grade trenches or culverts, position pipe, or seal joints. In addition to assisting pipelayers, the skilled laborer also works digging trenches for/around existing utilities, manually help with ensuring appropriate grading, and move materials/tools. The skilled laborer plays a major day to day role to keep work sites clean and compliant.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards and prepare for placement of aggregates, road/substrate, or utilities.
- Signal equipment operators to align, move or adjust machinery, equipment, or materials
- Load, unload, and/or identify materials and tools
- Dig ditches or trenches for/around existing utilities, back-fill excavations, grade and level trenches; may use tamping machine and/or hand tools. NOTE: May be trained to operate some heavier equipment.
- Performs general construction work (using hand tools, lifting materials on average up to 50 pounds) under direction of Pipe Layer, Crew Leader, Foreman or Supervisor.
- May perform flagging duties to control and maintain flow of traffic in work zone.
- Perform other duties, as and when assigned.
- Under supervision of pipelayers or supervision, may use tools to verify grading/level surface.
- Assist in aligning pipes manually during pipeline construction (generally for wet utilities [water/sewer]).
- Assist to connect pipes and seal joints using glue, cement, gaskets and/or flanges.
Qualifications
- Must have physical ability to stand strenuous and dangerous work environment. Must be comfortable working in 15ft -20ft trenches and other confined spaces.
- Has physical strength dig and perform general labor with laborer crews, including digging by hand and lifting/pushing/pulling materials.
- Able to communicate effectively with others and work cooperatively in teams (including resolving basic conflicts with or without the assistance of management).
- Handle emergency situations, work pressure and stress.
- Able to solve basic, common-sense problems using experience and construction knowledge.
- Must have a flexible schedule (make work irregular or odd hours in outdoor work sites, depending upon project needs or weather), including nights and weekends.
- Must have access to own transportation to reach non-standard work sites during non-standard hours.
