The South Island Police Academy (SIPA) is seeking expressions of interest for instructor positions to support our new pilot regional basic municipal recruit training program.
The inaugural class is slated to begin on September 14/2026, with preparatory instructor training scheduled for the first two weeks of that month.
This is a premier opportunity for Constables, Sergeants, Staff Sergeants, and Inspectors to shape the future of policing in the capital regional district on Vancouver Island while enhancing their leadership and instructional expertise. These roles are designed as supplemental assignments rather than secondments; therefore, subject matter experts will be scheduled alongside their regular duties.
Position Opportunities:
- Lead Instructors: Subject matter expert who leads the specific areas of instruction
- Assistant Instructors: Similar to Lead Instructor, utilized sporadically, either within scenarios or when facilitating on behalf or with the Lead Instructor.
- Exam Assessors: Utilized when evaluating and marking recruit scenarios
Position Summary:
- Report to the Administrative Staff Sergeant assigned to the SIPA pilot project
- Deliver instruction in your area of expertise using approved lesson plans
- Provide constructive verbal and written feedback to recruits
- Collaborate with other instructors, role players, and support staff
Instructor Commitment Overview:
- Workload: 2 – 6 hours per week for the 16-week Block 1 period; varies by discipline
- Support: Comprehensive instructional materials and slides are provided to minimize preparatory time
- Pre-Course Sessions: Information sessions will be held in the two weeks prior to the September 14th start date with partial attendance only required
- Academy Hours: Monday – Friday, 0730 – 1530
- Full Details: A detailed syllabus with specific time commitments will be confirmed and distributed in early June

Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous instructional experience
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Training and relevant operational experience

Application and Selection Process:
Stage 1 - Submission of application:
- Submit a one (1) page cover letter expressing which role(s) you are interested in and why you should be considered for the opportunity, including confirming your availability to start September 2026.
- Submit up to a two (2) page resume of supporting materials which demonstrate your suitability for the position, including how you meet the preferred qualifications, including relevant experience and instructional certifications.
- Download, complete, and submit this form: SIPA_Application for Position or Supplemental Duty. Supervisors are encouraged to closely review the applications received from their direct report, ensuring suitability requirements are met prior to signing off.
- Completed expressions of interest documents (cover letter, resume, supervisor sign off) must be submitted via BambooHR by June 1/2026 @ 1600 hours.
Stage 2 - Review and selection:
- Submissions will be reviewed by the contracted SIPA Program Director, the Victoria Police Department’s Administrative Staff Sergeant assigned to the SIPA pilot, and a Senior Officer from the Saanich Police Department.
- Interviews will take place during the last two (2) weeks of June 2026. Applicants can expect to participate in a thirty (30) minute interview consisting of three (3) to four (4) behavioural/situational and character-based questions to determine suitability.
- Instructor selection for the initial phase of the SIPA pilot will be identified by the end of June 2026.
