About the role

General:

We are seeking a dedicated, proactive and approachable Student (pupil) Monitor to help maintain a safe, respectful and well supervised school environment. 

The postholder will support pupils across a range of school settings, including corridors, areas around pupil toilets, the canteen, playgrounds, school grounds, arrival and dismissal areas, and other shared spaces. The role requires someone who is confident working with children and young people, able to set clear boundaries, and committed to supporting pupil wellbeing, safeguarding and positive behaviour. 

This is a pupil supervision and pastoral support role. The postholder will not be responsible for planning, delivering or assessing lessons, nor will they replace the role of a teacher.

Key Responsibilities and Duties 

Pupil Supervision 

Supervise pupils in key areas of the school, including the canteen, playgrounds, corridors, areas around pupil toilets, school grounds, parking areas, and arrival and dismissal points. 

Support safe and orderly movement around the school during transitions, breaktimes, lunchtimes, arrival, dismissal and early dismissal. 

Actively patrol designated areas of the campus, helping to prevent accidents, identify potential hazards and ensure pupils are safe. 

Support lunchtime routines by assisting pupils during meals, helping maintain orderly queues and encouraging respectful behaviour in the lunchroom. 

Supervise areas around pupil toilets in line with safeguarding expectations, ensuring safety, appropriate conduct and respect for pupil privacy. 

Behaviour and Pastoral Support 

Promote positive behaviour by encouraging respectful conduct, supporting school routines and addressing inappropriate or unsafe actions promptly and consistently. 

Support pastoral teams by helping pupils understand and follow school expectations, including uniform, punctuality, respectful conduct and safe movement around campus. 

Support the Senior School Pastoral Team with uniform compliance, following agreed procedures and escalating concerns where appropriate. 

Support agreed pupil reflection processes under the direction of the pastoral team, including following up with pupils after internal or external suspensions, where appropriate. 

Manage minor conflicts between pupils by encouraging respectful communication and helping pupils resolve issues constructively. 

Escalate behaviour, pastoral or safeguarding concerns promptly to the appropriate member of staff, in line with school procedures. 

Safeguarding, Wellbeing and Safety 

Demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding, child protection and the wellbeing of all pupils. 

Follow the school’s safeguarding, child protection and reporting procedures at all times. 

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with pupils in all interactions. 

Respond to pupil wellbeing or health needs by redirecting pupils to the Infirmary, Wellbeing Hub or relevant pastoral staff when necessary. 

Support the implementation of the school’s Missing Child protocol, following agreed procedures promptly and accurately. 

Record and report concerns accurately using the school’s established systems. 

Group Supervision 

When necessary, supervise pupils in a group setting on an occasional basis, following instructions provided by the relevant teacher, pastoral leader or academic leader.

This supervision is limited to maintaining a safe and orderly environment and ensuring pupils follow the instructions already provided.

The postholder will not be responsible for planning activities, delivering teaching content, assessing pupil work, adapting curriculum content or replacing the role of a teacher.

Play, Social Interaction and Pupil Engagement 

Encourage positive pupil interactions during breaktimes and lunchtimes. 

Support constructive, inclusive and respectful play. 

Organise or supervise simple games and activities during breaktimes where appropriate, promoting healthy social interaction and engagement. 

Working Relationships 

The postholder will work closely with: 

Junior School and Senior School Pastoral Teams. 

Safeguarding Team. 

Wellbeing Hub. 

Infirmary. 

Operations and Security teams. 

Teaching staff, where classroom supervision is required on an occasional basis. 

The Postholder Will Also 

Uphold and model the school’s culture and values in all aspects of their work. 

Work collaboratively with pastoral and wellbeing staff to ensure consistency in pupil support and supervision. 

Follow school procedures and reporting systems accurately and consistently. 

Treat pupils, families and colleagues with respect, discretion and professionalism. 

Support pupils during transitions across different areas of the school day. 

Attend relevant training related to safeguarding, behaviour, supervision and school procedures.

Role Boundaries 

This is not a teaching position. 

The postholder is not responsible for planning, delivering or assessing lessons. 

The postholder does not replace teachers or hold responsibility for academic progress. 

Any classroom supervision must be occasional, directed by the school and based on instructions already provided by a teacher or leader. 

Complex pastoral, behavioural, wellbeing or safeguarding matters must be escalated to the appropriate qualified member of staff.

Safeguarding

The offer of the role would be made subject to receipt of satisfactory references, proof of relevant qualifications, identification checks and other safeguarding checks (including Internet and Social Media profiles and exposure), an overseas check if appropriate and a pre-placement medical assessment. Proof of entitlement to work in Brazil is also required where necessary.

Fluent or highly proficient in English and Portuguese.

The successful candidate will be positive, proactive, calm and confident. They will have a firm but approachable interpersonal style and will be able to build respectful relationships with pupils while maintaining clear professional boundaries. 

They will be consistent, reliable and able to respond to situations with discretion, maturity and good judgement. 

Required Skills and Experience 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with children and young people. 

    Ability to remain calm, patient and consistent when managing pupil behaviour. 

    Strong communication skills in English and Portuguese. 

    Ability to work collaboratively with pastoral, wellbeing, safeguarding, teaching and operations teams. 

    Good judgement and the ability to escalate concerns appropriately. 

    High level of reliability, punctuality and professional discretion. 

    Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, both indoors and outdoors. 

    Previous experience working with children or young people in a school, camp, sports, recreation or similar setting is highly desirable. 

    Required Qualification 

    High school diploma or equivalent as a minimum requirement. 

    Additional training in child supervision, safeguarding, first aid, youth work, education or related areas would be desirable.
