Role: Subject Lead - Foundation

Reporting to: Associate Dean - Teaching and Learning

Location: London College of Contemporary Music (LCCM) (The Music Box campus) - SE1

Salary: Competitive DOE

Role Summary

The Foundation year has been designed to support progression onto degree programmes at LCCM and forms part of the 4-year degree courses. The course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills to progress onto level 4, specifically in the areas of music business, performance, song writing and production. Additionally, the Foundation programme ensures that students are at the academic level required to progress onto level 4. Students will gain the proficiency of academic language required to succeed at level 4. The subject lead role focuses on creating holistic approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the experiences delivered will progress and retain students. As the Subject Lead, you will lead and manage the design, development and delivery of the curriculum and all areas of learning, teaching and assessment. Staff will look to you for leadership and support, while you will be entrusted with efficient quality control, resource management and a collaborative working approach. This is also an opportunity for the role-holder to work with and assist the Programme Leader in this crucial curriculum area within the College. The role holder will be expected to engage in research and or professional practice to increase their subject, practice and pedagogic awareness. The role holder will also be expected to attract, recruit, teach students at LCCM and to contribute to extra-curriculum activities, such as delivery of staff development programmes and other cross-College initiatives. The successful candidate will have a demonstratable teaching record of innovation and success in the classroom across all levels, programme design, creation of teaching materials and discipline expertise. The role holder will be expected to engage in research and or professional practice/enterprise in subject-specific territories.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver teaching across modules within your subject area, in line with allocated load, including pastoral support

  • Lead and manage named modules, ensuring high quality teaching, assessment, and student academic experience

  • Maintain academic standards through effective assessment design, marking oversight, and standardisation of feedback

  • Monitor, evaluate, and enhance module delivery, including responding to student feedback

  • Contribute to curriculum development and cross disciplinary teaching strategies with the academic team

  • Engage with quality assurance and administrative processes, including annual monitoring and exam boards

  • Support programme leadership in meetings, committees, and implementation of institutional policies

  • Maintain industry engagement and subject expertise through ongoing professional development

  • Use appropriate technologies to enhance learning, teaching, and organisational effectiveness

  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work

  • Undertake additional duties consistent with the role as required

  • Coordinate teaching activity across staff and demonstrators

Qualifications & Experience

Essential :

  • Relevant BA qualification or equivalent professional experience

  • Teaching qualification (PG Cert or equivalent)

  • Experience of teaching & assessment in a Higher Education environment

  • Experience of curriculum design and development and the creation of course materials that support student development

  • Experience of an innovative and inclusive approach to teaching in Higher Education, contributing to student success

  • Experience of leading and managing education (people, curriculum, quality & standards, students, recruitment)

  • Evidence of research, knowledge exchange and/ or professional practice that contributes to the advancement of the Discipline and is relevant to the goals of the Course, College and music industries.

Desirable :

  • Post graduate or higher research degree

  • Fellowship (or Higher) of the Higher Education Academy

  • Experience of leading or coordinating a Foundation or access programme.

  • Experience of curriculum validation or revalidation.

  • Experience of mentoring or supporting the development of academic staff.

  • Engagement with outreach or widening participation initiatives.

  • Evidence of successful partnership working with schools, colleges, or industry.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential :

  • Expertise and the ability to develop course materials and teach music.

  • Considers equality, diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of teaching practice

  • Shows commitment to understanding the range of students’ experiences within a course

  • Ability to motivate and work in a collaborative way with assessment practice including how to assess the work and progress of students and provide constructive, developmental and challenging feedback

  • Demonstrate relevant professional networks and relationships that bring expert external knowledge to student learning, employment and enterprise

  • Effectively plan and manage workload, prioritising work to meet deadlines and achieve personal, team and course objectives.

Desirable :

  • Understanding of widening participation and inclusive pedagogical approaches.

  • Familiarity with UK higher education regulatory frameworks (e.g., FHEQ, QAA Quality Code, OfS B3 metrics).

  • Ability to interpret and utilise student data to enhance retention and progression.

  • Experience of cross-institutional collaboration to support student success.
