About the role

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide care to children, ages 6 weeks to 12 years, who are members and guests of the YMCA.
  • Ensure that all shifts are covered, including stepping in to cover shifts when staff members are unavailable.
  • Supervise children during playtime and facilitate activities to keep them engaged in a fun and stimulating environment.
  • Create and maintain a safe and welcoming space for children and parents.
  • Model YMCA values (caring, responsibility, honesty, and respect) in all interactions with children, parents, and fellow staff members.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times, emphasizing both personal safety and emotional well-being.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Keeps safety of children as first priority.  Emphasizes personal safety and emotional well-being with the children and parents.
  • Never leave the children unattended.
  • Provide a fun, safe, and stimulating atmosphere for the children.
  • Develop and foster a “family club” atmosphere by participating with members in an enthusiastic, courteous, and friendly manner.
  • By personal example, helps to interpret the quality of the YMCA values to children, staff, and parents.   Must be a positive role model.
  • Learn all emergency procedures and familiarize yourself with the first aid equipment.  
  • Keep room clean of food and small objects which may be deemed a choking hazard.
  • Inspect room each morning for possible hazards, clean and vacuum room prior to closing each day.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Previous experience working with children in a babysitting, child care or school setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults and children alike. 
  • Child Abuse Prevention (or within 90 days of employment) 
  • Respect in the Workplace (or within 90 days of employment)
  • Others to be determined
  • CPR, First Aid, AED
