About the role
- Responsible to provide a safe and credible swim lesson program.
- Instruct swim classes for children and adults.
- Plans and effectively organizes class time to maximize skills and success.
- Maintain and provide records related to class content and progression notes for participants.
- Provide feedback to students and parents regarding a swimmer’s progress.
- Stay current with new teaching methods and techniques.
- Assist with patron safety to prevent emergencies.
- Administer First Aid, CPR or AED, if needed.
- Responsible for preparation of spaces and equipment for swim lessons.
- Work as a team with other staff on duty, including but not limited to: lifeguards, facility staff, and management.
- Arrive promptly and prepared to your scheduled class sessions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be a current Lifeguard with Spartan Recreation and have worked for a minimum of one semester.
- Must possess Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications. American Red Cross preferred. Online certifications will not be accepted.
- Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half-time* during the academic term.
- *Half-time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half-time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester.
- Ability to meet swimming requirements.
- Attend Swim lesson Training Dates
- Ability to lift 45-65 pounds safely and stand or be in water for an extended period of time.
- Knowledge of swim strokes and teaching techniques.
- Ability to work effectively with youth and adults in an instructional environment.
- Knowledge of aquatic policies and pool rules.
- Ability to manage situations which require resolution and problem solving.
- Excellent customer service, ability to manage conflicts, and create an inclusive environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with a diverse community clientele.
- Must have open availability for opening, closing, and weekend shifts.
- Attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings, training days, and workshops.
Work Requirements
- The position works in an outdoor aquatic environment, subject to severe hot, cold and inclement weather.
- The physical demands of this position are described below:
- Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
- Fall (Slip, Trip) conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
- Heat illness/temperature extremes that result in heat stress, exhaustion, or metabolic slow down such as hypothermia.
- Chemical exposure – absorption through the skin, inhalation, or through the bloodstream that causes illness, disease, or death.
- Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-75 lbs.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
