About the role
- Build new WordPress websites from scratch or customise themes/child-themes according to design/functional requirements.
- Develop and maintain WordPress plugins (custom plugins, enhancements) as needed to support specific site functionalities (e.g., podcast integration, video embedding, transcript display, content hub).
- Customize existing WordPress plugins and themes to meet specific project requirements.
- Optimize website performance—front-end (minification, lazy-loading, image optimisation, caching) and back-end (efficient queries, clean database, hosting configuration).
- Ensure WordPress sites are built with SEO best practices in mind: semantic HTML, structured data, fast load times, mobile friendly, crawlable architecture.
- Ensure website security and stability: secure code, regular updates to WordPress core/themes/plugins, handle backups and disaster recovery considerations.
- Integrate third-party services/APIs (e.g., podcast services, video platforms, social media feeds, transcription engines, CRM/marketing tools).
- Collaborate with content/SEO teams to ensure website supports their workflows (e.g., enabling content hubs, blog architecture, media libraries).
- Work in a remote environment: manage tasks, deliverables, time zones, and communication effectively.
- Use version control (Git or equivalent) and adhere to development workflows (branching, pull requests, code review).
- Provide ongoing maintenance/support for live WordPress sites: bug-fixes, updates, performance monitoring, and optimization.
- Document technical architecture, customizations, and hand-off instructions for future team use.
- 4-5 years of professional experience developing with WordPress (themes, plugins, customizations).
- Strong proficiency in PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (vanilla and comfortable with libraries/frameworks as needed).
- Demonstrated experience building or customizing WordPress plugins.
- Experience customizing or building WordPress themes (child themes, frameworks, starter themes).
- Good knowledge of performance optimisation for WordPress: caching, query optimisation, asset management, lazy loading, image/asset optimisation.
- Familiarity with SEO best practices from a technical/website perspective (page speed, schema, mobile performance, accessibility).
- Experience integrating external APIs or third-party services in WordPress context.
- Good understanding of security best practices in WordPress (sanitization, roles/capabilities, hardening).
- Experience using version control (e.g., Git) and working in team development workflows.
- Strong communication skills (written and spoken English), self-motivated and comfortable working remotely.
- Able to manage and prioritise tasks independently in a remote contract environment.
- Experience with headless or decoupled WordPress architectures (WordPress REST API, GraphQL).
- Familiarity with modern PHP tooling (Composer, PSR standards, WP-CLI).
- Experience with page builders (Elementor, Beaver Builder, Gutenberg blocks) and custom block development.
- Experience working with media-rich websites (podcasts, videos, transcripts) and integrating with media platforms.
- Familiarity with cloud hosting and DevOps for WordPress (AWS, DigitalOcean, Docker).
- Basic knowledge of marketing/SEO tools (Google Analytics, Search Console, SEO plugins) and content workflows.
